How Much Do Door to Door Salesmen Make? (Real Numbers From 10 Years in the Field)
Everyone wants to know how much do door to door salesmen make. Most answers online are vague. Here are real numbers from someone who lived it.
I started knocking doors at 19. I had no plan. I needed money. Ten years later I had built a $2M net worth from this job. Here is exactly what I made each year.
My Actual Income, Year by Year
2016 (age 19, rookie, Houston): $32K. I was terrible. I got doors slammed in my face daily. I kept showing up.
2017 (age 20, assistant manager, Houston): $119K. Something clicked. I learned the pitch, learned to handle objections, learned to work a full day.
2018 (age 21, sales manager, Houston): $148K. Started leading a small team. Made more from my own sales than from overrides.
2019 (age 22, sales manager, Dallas): $222K. New market, bigger territory, better product knowledge.
2020 (age 23, sales manager, Austin): $300K. Pandemic year. Everyone thought D2D was dead. It was not. People were home. They answered doors.
2021 (age 24, sales manager, Phoenix): $463K. A big year. Not the best year.
2022 (age 25, sales manager, Austin): $360K. Still strong. Started thinking about wealth, not just income.
2023 (age 26, sales manager, Omaha): $291K. Tougher market. Still more than most doctors make.
2024 (age 27, sales manager, Kansas City): $320K. Back up. Systems dialed in.
2025 (age 28, sales manager, Kansas City): $472K. Best year. That figure is nonemployee compensation (pre-tax) on the 1099.
2026 (age 29, sales manager, Nashville): 1099 still pending.
That is the real answer to how much do door to door salesmen make. It depends entirely on you.
The next question people ask is is it worth it?. If you are new, read how beginners survive the first 30 days. my full story is longer than this income list, and these are reps who followed the same path.
Why the Range Is So Wide
The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts median pay for sales representatives in the $60K to $70K range nationally. But D2D is almost entirely commission. There is no ceiling. There is also no floor.
I have seen rookies make $15K in a summer because they quit mentally in week three. First-year reps who stay usually land in the $40K to $80K range. Year 2 is usually $90K to $150K.
The difference is not talent. It is showing up. D2D is a filter. Most people cannot handle rejection 50 times a day. The ones who can get paid extremely well.
What Affects Your Pay the Most
Product. Selling a $50 product door to door is a grind. Selling a real product with real value (home security, solar, pest control) pays real commissions. I sell for Vivint, an NRG company. Real product. Fortune 500 parent. That matters.
Market. Some cities are goldmines. Some are dead zones. Good companies place you where the opportunity is.
Work ethic. This is 80% of it. Knock more doors, make more money. It is that simple and that hard.
Skill. The pitch, the close, the objection handling. These are learnable. I was awful at 19. I got good through reps.
Tenure. Year one you are learning. Year two you are earning. Year three and beyond you are compounding. My income nearly 15x'd from year one to year five.
Commission vs Salary: The Honest Math
A salaried job pays you for time. D2D pays you for results. If you want safety, get a salary. If you want upside, sell.
Here is what nobody tells you: the skills transfer. Talking to strangers. Reading people. Handling rejection. Managing your own schedule. These made me more money in every area of life, not just sales.
So How Much Do Door to Door Salesmen Make?
Bad ones: $20K to $30K. They quit.
Average ones: $50K to $80K. They work but coast.
Good ones: $100K to $250K. They show up daily and keep improving.
Great ones: $300K+. They treat it like a profession, not a summer gig.
I went from $32K in Houston to a best year of $472K in Kansas City. No degree. No connections. Just doors.
